Forestry Mulching

Home › Services › Forestry Mulching

Forestry mulching is the quickest way to take property from grown-up to open. A skid steer with a mulching head drives through the brush and small trees and grinds them into chips right where they stand. No piles, no hauling, no bare dirt, and in most cases the job is done in a day or two.

What mulching does and doesn't do

The mulcher handles brush, vines, saplings, and smaller trees, and it leaves a layer of wood chips on the ground that holds the soil and slows the regrowth. It's the right tool when you want the property opened up, walkable, and looking cared for: overgrown acreage, fence lines, the edges of a yard, a wooded lot you want to see through before you decide where the house goes.

What it doesn't do is remove stumps or move dirt. If the plan is a building pad or a driveway, mulching is often the first step and land clearing and grading follow. We do all of it, so we can tell you honestly on the site walk whether mulching alone gets you what you want or whether the job needs more.

Residential mulching is a normal job for us

Because a lot of S5's work is bigger development and homesite projects, people sometimes assume we don't take the one- and two-acre residential jobs anymore. We do. A day of mulching around a house or on a small tract is easy, straightforward work, and we'll gladly keep a skid steer busy on it.

So if you have a couple of acres behind the house that have gotten away from you, or a lot you want cleaned up so you can actually walk it, call. That's exactly the kind of job this service is for.

Why the finish matters

Not every mulching job looks the same when the machine leaves. A rushed pass leaves tall stubs, half-ground stems, and a rough surface. A careful pass leaves a low, even layer of chips you can walk across and mow around once it settles. There are a lot of skid steers for hire around Metro Atlanta, and some of them are priced to just get the brush knocked down. If the property matters to you, the finish matters, and that's the standard we work to.

Pricing and what to expect

Mulching is usually priced per project, with the site walk telling us how thick the growth is, how big the stems are, and how the ground lays. Simple jobs can often be priced right there on the property. Slopes, wet areas, and heavy stands of larger trees all take more time and get factored in.

On the day of the job, the machine comes in, works the area we agreed on, and leaves the mulch layer in place. There's nothing to haul and nothing to burn, and the ground is usable as soon as we pull out.

FAQ

How big a tree can the mulcher handle?

It depends on the species and the machine, and we'd rather look at the property than quote a number. Brush, saplings, and smaller trees are what mulching is built for. Larger trees are usually land clearing work, which we also do.

Does the mulch get hauled away?

No. It stays on the ground as a layer of chips. That protects the soil, keeps the dust down, and slows the regrowth. If you want a bare, graded surface instead, that's a clearing and grading job.

Can you mulch around trees I want to keep?

Yes. Walk the property with us and point out what stays. Working around keeper trees is normal on residential jobs.
