Land Clearing
Home › Services › Land Clearing
Land clearing is taking wooded ground and turning it into open, usable ground: trees down, stumps out or ground, debris dealt with. It's the first step on almost every homesite and development project we touch, and it's also a job on its own when you just want the property opened up.

What land clearing covers
Clearing is the heavy end of the work. Where forestry mulching grinds brush and small trees in place, land clearing removes the trees, deals with the stumps, and gets the debris off the footprint. Depending on the site, that means excavators pulling and piling, dozers pushing, loaders moving material, and our horizontal grinder turning stumps and tops into mulch instead of leaving them in a pile.
We clear lots for houses, acreage for pasture or use, and larger development sites where a whole tract needs to come down before grading starts. Tree work near structures and removal of select trees is also something we handle, so if the job is a mix of open clearing and careful work around a house, it can all be one scope.
Lots, acreage, and development sites
A single wooded lot in a neighborhood and a twenty-acre development site are different jobs, but they get the same approach. On a lot, the work is tight, the neighbors are close, and the finish matters because a house is going on it. On a larger site, the job is about moving through the acreage efficiently and leaving it ready for the grading phase.
S5 Earthworks has cleared both, and we size the equipment to the property instead of running one machine on everything. If you're a builder or developer with several lots or a phase to clear, ask about scheduling the whole thing as one project.
Right-of-way and corridor clearing
Right-of-way maintenance and clearing is part of what we do as well. That covers clearing and mulching along corridors so lines can go in or be maintained, and keeping existing right-of-way open. It's the same equipment and the same crew as our other clearing work, just on a longer, narrower piece of ground. If you have a right-of-way, easement, or access corridor that needs to be opened or maintained, call and describe it and we'll tell you how we'd approach it.
What affects the price
Clearing is priced per project after a site walk, sometimes per acre when that's the cleaner way to do it. The biggest factors are how dense the trees are, how big they are, whether stumps need to come out or can be ground, how the ground lays, and whether anything has to be hauled off site. Access matters too: a lot we can drive straight onto costs less to work than one that needs a path cut first.
After the walk you get one written price for the scope we agreed on. If the job includes hauling, material, or rock, it's itemized so you can see each piece.
FAQ
Is land clearing the same as forestry mulching?
No. Mulching grinds brush and smaller trees where they stand and leaves the chips on the ground. Clearing removes trees and stumps so the ground can be graded and built on. Many jobs use some of each, and we do both.
Do you burn the debris?
Our normal approach is to grind stumps and debris on site with the horizontal grinder. That leaves usable mulch instead of a burn pile and avoids the weather and permit issues that come with burning.
Can you clear a lot that's already had a house on it?
Call and describe it. Overgrown lots, old homesites, and property that's grown up over the years are common jobs, and a site walk will tell us what's involved.
